Why don't you just try compiling a newer kernel on your present system?
With LILO you can have multiple kernel versions defined (I have six or
seven on my system just in case! :-) The only major package you would have
to update would be the procps stuff (you need 0.99a) and that is compatable
with the previous kernels I think (I'll try booting an old kernel tonight).
So even if the newer kernel didn't work out for you (and I can't imagine
why it wouldn't) you could still boot with your old kernel. OH, I almost
forgot you could make a temp copy of ppp-2.2.0e since you need that with
the newer kernels too. All you would have to do for that would to change
your ppp-on script temporarily.
