}I have 8 meg of RAM and a Swap disk. /dev/hda1 30% free.

Do you have a swap partition?  If so, how large is it? Looks to me like you
ran out of memory when you were trying to compile.

}Using Linux 1.1.59

You may want to get a later kernel too.

}I'm a FORTRAN programmer.

Better than COBOL...  Not quite as groovy as C/C++ :)
