Color Problems Under X

These color problems remind me of a similar problem I am having with my X
window, but from the other end of the spectrum (no pun intended).  I am
using an ATI Mach 64 in 1024x768 mode with 16-bit color.  I have two
packages (X Doom included) that tell me that  they will not handle anything
over a 256 color driver mode.  Essentially, I have to exit and downshift to
a lower color scheme for the program to run.  Is there any way to force
these kinds of programs to run in a 16-bit color mode?  Any helps is
appreciated--thanks in advance!
