Rudely following up my own note:

jm- Thanks to the developers/maintainers.  nedit 4.0.1 built out of the box
jm- for me  [in linux/a.out]

And likewise built dead clean on Solaris 2.5
  (just say: "make <system_type>_nedit").

jm- [...]  I find fully-qualified
jm- filenames in the file selection box is space-consuming and perhaps not
jm- an improvement

Trying this a bit more, the leading directories are elided once a file is
open.  I remain an enthusiast.
