Description
 
Job Purpose: Provide unit level support in the installation, operation and maintenance of a wide variety of applications within a diverse customer base. Position typically addresses highly complex issues using advanced system/infrastructural concepts and campus objectives and working with a high degree of autonomy. May manage project teams.

Major Responsibilities:
Lead in understanding business needs of the unit supported to define new solutions and technology applications to serve them.
Provide expert technical advice and/or leadership to technical teams.
Diagnose and resolve highly complex technical problems with computer hardware, software and servers.
Identify and implement server replacement or upgrades.
Analyze and resolve highly complex workstation, application and server related problems.
Deliver technical related presentations to other systems support personnel and unit administrators.
Develop and recommend standard operating procedures
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
Work Experience: Four to six years job related experience.
Certifications: N/A
Skills: This job requires expert knowledge of and skill in the installation and maintenance of information technology hardware and software, requiring an in-depth understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures. Included are skills in problem solving, decision making, technical/project leadership, customer service, system documentation and communications.

Preferred Work Experience: 
Experience in a college/university environment
Experience with specific technologies such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Xen/KVM, Kerberos, LDAP, NIS, Active Directory, DNS, SSH, CUPS, and SMB, CIFS, and NFS files services.
Experience with programming languages (e.g. Python, Java, C++, etc.), databases (e.g. MySQL) and web server technologies (e.g. Apache, PHP, SSL)
Experience with DevOps-style system management tools
Experience with virtualized clients and hypervisors
Linux systems administration experience, preferably in a complex, medium- to large-scale, heterogeneous environment that includes Linux/UNIX, Mac OS X, and Windows client systems accessing physical and virtual Linux servers.
Experience with Unicron, CrashPlan, or Bacula
Preferred Certifications: Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) or higher
Preferred Skills: 
Knowledge of server installation and administration, system monitoring and troubleshooting, hardware maintenance and troubleshooting, patch management, configuration management, virtualization, networking, information security, account management, identity management, authentication and authorization, directory services, file services, backup & recovery, and print server management.
Knowledge of a UNIX scripting language (e.g. perl, ksh, bash) and common system administration tools
Working knowledge of Windows Server
Understanding of basic IP networking concepts
Basic knowledge of cloud environments, such as AWS, OpenStack, or Azure
A high degree of judgment
Additional Information: This position may be exposed to working near electrical circuits and requires handling of objects up to 25 pounds and some standing and walking.

Besides Linux systems administration, this position will be responsible for managing and maintaining the College's backup infrastructure. This position will interact with faculty engaged at the forefront of the research and development of world-class, cutting edge technologies. This position will work closely with the College's Windows systems administrators and network administrators to ensure cross-platform services are maintained and available.

Candidate should have excellent verbal/written communication skills, strong service orientation, and the ability to work well with other professionals in providing technical solutions in an advanced computing environment.
 
Impact & Influence: This position will interact on a consistent basis with: users within assigned unit which include management, faculty and staff personnel. This position typically will advise and counsel: users and other support personnel. This position will supervise: N/A (project direction only).

Department Description
 
The Technology Services Organization (TSO) provides information technology leadership and support to the College of Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology, working in partnership with schools, research centers, and business units to meet the unique technical needs of faculty, staff, and students. TSO is responsible for the overall computing and networking infrastructure, as well as technical support, necessary to sustain the College's programs in research, instruction, and administration.
