Well, I dunno about you, but I paid exactly zero dinero for all of my Verizon phones, going back donkey's ages, including both Kyocera Palm Pilots. When Verizon is giving me a $500 phone, and getting most of that back over time each month, I cannot really complain if they have made efforts to prevent me from jumping ship to another carrier. Although, using CDMA instead of GSM is a pretty big step in that direction. It seems most of their modern phones also support GSM.

Reading their notes on unlocking policy, it seems they do unlock their prepaid phones after a year.

OTOH, I can get really hacked sometimes that there have been zero Android updates to my HTC phone for about 4 years now, and apparently nothing on the horizon. Apparently they want me to chunk a perfectly good phone.
Verizon's phones typically feature locked bootloaders and obstacles to rooting tools. T-Mobile is marginally better. I don't know if that's just negligence or the result of a hideous political fight in the technical departments. I do, however, want control of my own devices with a minimum of hassle.
Yeah, but Verizon makes up for it by having really expensive plans to using the same phone in Europe... *8-) But, I understand their phones are unlocked for international use, so you can buy a SIM card at the airport when you land.

But seriously folks.... Verizon seems to have a tower pretty much everywhere. We were camped in Humbolt state park 100 miles north of San Francisco, amongst the redwoods, and there ain't NOTHING around this park. No gas stations, no stores, no convenience stores, no houses. And we have a 4-bar Verizon signal.

In aggregate terms, one suspects that European carriers have far fewer towers to maintain.

I actually USED TO have an unlimited Verizon plan, but never did use enough of it to justify keeping it. They have gotten increasingly more reasonable - I guess my many years of complaining to them as both our children and my wife left them for Ting.
