<div dir="ltr">Hey Liam!<div><br></div><div>In Python1 we had to use that "code runner" environment, and then in successive classes (Python2 - 4) there was the Eclipse environment (student version). I actually wound up only using the remote desktop stuff just to submit assignments and create projects spaces. I would scp the completed files in, with whatever changes that were needed to run on a remote winders env. But mostly I used vim and stuff on my slackware box to do all the assignments. That didn't seem to cause any heartburn with my instructors, as they were mostly unix geeks too. They thought it was good to get some experience with IDEs so you could find your way around, but they didn't care as long as you got the assignments in. Now, I'm actually kinda interested in IDEs. On larger projects, they might be useful.</div><div><br></div><div>So you're into Ruby? Excellent. Seems to me like Ruby and Python are very close, except for the underlying philosophy regarding one "Pythonic way" and "TMTOWTDI". From what little I can see, Ruby seems like a very clean language. Looks easier to maintain than Perl!!!! :-) (I guess that's not a great comparison!)</div><div><br></div><div>Dave</div></div><div class="gmail_extra"><br><div class="gmail_quote">On Mon, Sep 7, 2015 at 11:58 AM, Leam Hall <span dir="ltr"><<a href="mailto:leamhall@gmail.com" target="_blank">leamhall@gmail.com</a>></span> wrote:<br><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0 0 0 .8ex;border-left:1px #ccc solid;padding-left:1ex">Hey David!<br>

I've not tried Lynda.com. Can't say that it's bad, but O'Reilly has been a name I can trust for more than a decade. I too did one of the OST classes but was really turned off by the "use our dinky IDE" part. Having someone critique your code was great, though.<br>
<br>
On that front, I'm often on IRC asking newbie Ruby questions. If someone is into PHP there's <a href="https://phpmentoring.org/" rel="noreferrer" target="_blank">https://phpmentoring.org/</a><br>
<br>
My assumption is that there's something similar for other languages. In this case I got a couple "tickets" for class since we're not really doing off-site stuff due to costs. Harder to get them to pay for a monthly subscription, I think.<br>

Thanks Leam!<br>

I'm still broken hearted over them closing OReilly School of<br>
Technology. I finished my Python certificate, but I had wanted to take<br>
a lot more classes there. Getting an actual live mentor was terrific.<br>
I don't think this path includes the live mentor who goes over all your<br>
code assignments. I'll really miss that! At this point, I'm not quite<br>
sure what the difference is with Lynda.com. Does it look different to you?<br>
<br>
Thanks!<br>

For those who missed it, tomorrow is the last day, I think. They<br>
have groups of videos at $99 each. Most groups are 3-5 videos and<br>
generally near $99 per video.<br>
