I have a RPi running XBMC (openelec), the only issue I have an haven't found a way to fix it, anything that uses player.swf . For a remote, I am using a wireless mouse, and my 8 year can move around very well. I also got the wireless that Richard B recommend. I know that Microcenter sells a Pi that already XBMC, it comes with a remote.

The Chromecast works with your existing remote, can be power off your tv, and you can stream from your laptop to the chrome cast via chrome. For the money, I go with it.

You want to stream *from* the RPi running XBMC? That doesn't make sense to me. The RPi is the perfect device to be connected to your TV. You can share media over the network using SMB or other file sharing protocols. The only sticking point might be that the RPi supports h264 encoded video in hardware (so that will decode just fine), but other formats might not. Maybe it can stream from MediaTomb using a plugin.
No. I want to stream to the device from my desktop.

It supports MediaTomb and I have that working.
What I'm looking for is a device I can purchase that will work 99% of the time.
