Eastern Europe and heavy Linux usage are indicators of probing by robots. Look for a series of connections to web server coupled with other port probes like ssh and printing ports 631 and vnc ports. Be especially aware of tomcat and any java application. Tweak iptables to log everything just before being blocked.

I hadn't looked at these stats in a while. I'm seeing:
47% Windows
30% Linux
16% Mac OS
3% each iOS and Android

46% Chrome
30% Firefox
10% Safari
9% IE
So far in June, I see about
* 57.5% Windows (38% is Win7)
* 21.6% Linux (16% is unknown distros)
* 13.7% OSX
* others.

All those hits from Eastern Europe could be blog spammers. It could also be
abused as an open-referrer website. That is what I used to see, until I started
using block lists and prevented redirection URLs in comments.

Browsers:
* 37.9% Chrome
* 31.4% Firefox
* 10.8% IE
* 7.8% Safari
* others.

Opera is just 1.7% here and I don't recall it ever being much larger than that.
I provide RSS feeds and aggressively block blog-spamming subnets around the
world at the firewall. I also block 1 Microsoft subnet after they started
spamming. ;)

Lots of automatic processing tools will spoof their OS and Browser to look like
WinXP. It is easier to fit into the crowd. If you look at the browser headers,
you'll see things that don't make sense and you'll know it is a robot hitting
your website. We can't trust the analytic tools completely.
Hi,

I run a small website for a couple of friends. Looking at the statistics for
the site I noticed the following for June:

Windows (all versions) 68.2% (42% of the total traffic XP)
Linux (unknow distro) 23.4%

The two most popular browsers:
MSIE 6.0 30.2% (All MSIE combined 45.1% of the total traffic)
Opera 30.0%

For some odd reason this English langauge site is popular in Eastern Europe.
Scratches head.

What struck me, in this less than scientific sample, was the extremely high
percentage of Linux users visiting the site, almost a quarter. In the press
typically states that Linux adoption is about 1 - 2% of all users. So I
would have guessed about max of 5 - 6% for Linux on any given month.
Previous months have been about 20% Linux. The high percentage of XP is much
less surprising to me since this site is likely to be viewed by casual
surfers not businesses. Also, there is no reported W7 or W8 traffic.

Also, the browser distribution does not square with the usual claims of
browser usage with Opera being ~ 2% and MSIE dominated by 8 and 9. Also,
only about 2/3 of all Windows users are using any version of MSIE. The Opera
usage jumped from minimal to about 20% + in January.

I know there is a push in many countries to replace all versions of Windows
with Linux across the board. Does anyone know what Linux iniatives are going
in Eastern Europe or Europe?
