Thanks for that pointer.

Verizon just blew me off again on activating my old Incredible. Cheapest data plan is $30/mo.

Which is galling when I have unlimited data from them for less.

It sounds like Ting is exactly what she needs. 100mins, 100 texts, 100mb of data is $15/mo. She can leave the data turned off except when she truly needs it.

I agree on coverage. If you go camping, you want Verizon.
I haven't been following this thread too closely. Someone asked about an android phone without a data plan. I can't answer the question directly. However, I wanted to mention that Radio Shack has phones from a whole bunch of carriers. They may be more of an independent source and MAY have more flexibility in terms of contracts. I think they have att, verizon, sprint, tmobile, virgin mobile, and a few other pay as you go names I can't remember.
I would strongly recommend looking at https://ting.com/r/twich. This is the Ting company, with a referral code for TWICH, the This Week In Computer Hardware podcast. Ting is a reseller for the Sprint network. However, they have very cool pay for only what you use plans without outrageous overage fees. If you go over, you just go up to the next pricing tier. I haven't used them, just heard their ads and looked at their website.
In my opinion, Sprint is not a great choice if you're taking your phone away from the city areas and into rural areas. I think Verizon is the best for that.
Sincerely,
Ron

Sent from my Android Acer A500 tablet with bluetooth keyboard and K-9 Mail.
Please excuse my potential brevity if I'm typing on the touch screen.
(PS - If you email me and don't get a quick response, you might want to
call on the phone. I get about 300 emails per day from alternate energy
mailing lists and such. I don't always see new email messages very quickly.)
