You're often moving at 5-10 times the speed of a pedestrian, and the drunks turning right into their driveways won't see you halfway down the block. At that distance you won't have time to react when they come in front of you. Notta mention that the sidewalk is designed for and used by pedestrians ( that's why it's called a sideWALK), and so is often filled with debris and other obstacles which you have limited room to negotiate on your bike.

OTOH, I am pretty sure that I should ride my uni on the sidewalk. It's way slower and more maneuverable than a bike.

-- CHS

I have noticed on my jaunts to Boulder that above the Mason-Dixon line, driving changes radically for the better. If I'm approaching someone in the left lane, they pull over to the right. If I use my turn signal to indicate I'm changing lanes, the car I'm about to pull in front of will either make a bit more room for me of flash lights to let me know I'm clear when it's really close. No one guns it to cut me off from changing lanes.
I grew up in the midwest and at that time I observed the same thing. The reason, I believe, is (or was) that there were laws in place that required you to drive on the right unless passing. They were well enforced. The UK is the same way.
