<font face="tahoma,sans-serif">I can run with the open source driver. However, with this I get no menus in Unity. And if I run in Gnome shell, I can't do anything at all. So, it looks like KDE is the way to go. I just hope *that* works.<br>

</div>Have you tried simply uninstalling the catalyst/fglrx packages?<br>

My son just upgraded to 12.10 and since he uses a radeon 4650, he called<br>
me for advice when he this X version issue.<br>

After I had him delete the proprietary drivers and reboot, it appears to<br>
have worked just fine. The in-kernel radeon driver isn't your grandma's<br>
chevrolet, so to speak.<br>
