<p dir="ltr">I get that plenum cable is required. That makes sense. What doesn't make sense is that my read of the NEC 2011 ed (the one that Georgia uses now) seems to require that in the wall, cat6 must be installed in conduit. I fail to see the reason for that, if the cable is being used for an appropriate application, such as gigabit Ethernet, which doesn't even use the 48VDC that PoE does. </p>

Because there are building codes that need to be followed and liability<br>
at issue. Most commercial work (office space) is going to involve<br>
running cable above ceilings with open plenum construction (HVAC air<br>
return is the open space above the ceilings) so you need plenum rated<br>
cable (TFE jacketed), not just plain ole Cat 6. There may also be<br>
requirements for support and securing as well. You don't want some<br>
untrained chump coming in with spools of cable he just bought at Fry's<br>
and tossing PVC jacketed cable (which is toxic in a fire) around in the<br>
open air space about the ceilings leading into the building air system.<br>
