If you reinstall 12.04 you might try Cinnamon
(ppa:merlwiz79/cinnamon-ppa is an unofficial repository with the
latest version). I just installed Cinnamon on 12.04 for the wife on
her laptop and she likes it so far.<br>

I have Ubuntu on my laptop.
The first thing I did was installed GNOME 3 from the PPA, and ditched
the use of Unity. I was much happier with responsiveness from my system
then.
