I'm in Cumming, and could potentially come over and try to help. However, I know a little bit about Linux compared to many others here. At best, my help would be try to assist you in performing some steps that have been suggested, log the results, and ask for more help from the group. So, it's probably better to use someone more experienced. I did notice that Jim Lynch also said he might be able to come over there in one of the other messages.

I know your first priority now is to get the server running. But, in another message you said you'd had some UPS and power failures. I was recently dealing with some UPS issues and posed questions about it here. You might want to seriously consider a new UPS. It was recommended that I only consider TripLite or APC units. I recently bought an APC Smart UPS 750 and like it very much. This UPS has the ability to boost sagging voltage and cut excessive voltage, up to a point. If there are extremely violent electrical storms around, it still wouldn't be a bad idea to shut down the server.

With a tower PC and a couple of monitors running and a few accessories running, it gives me about 7 minutes of run time during a power failure. You need to connect the communications cable (usually USB) to the PC and set it to auto shutdown properly in the event of a power failure which lasts for any period of time.

UPS's need to be tested under load periodically. And, the batteries need replacing every few years. Also, if you look at the spec sheet for the UPS (in this case), you will find that it doesn't have a lot of surge protection, in terms of the number of joules of energy it will absorb. It's somewhere in the 300 joules range. This was a big surprise to me. Therefore, I have a high quality APC surge protector, which can absorb over 3000 joules sitting between the wall outlet and the UPS. This UPS costs around $ 290 at Frys and the surge protector costs around $ 50.

I'll be glad to help you sort out these issues later if you like. Write me off list and I'll give you some other contact phone numbers. My email address and one phone number (which goes to an answering machine) is in my signature below.

Sincerely,
He did say he had a programmer that was familiar with Linux but probably
wasn't a true sys admin. I'm hoping Marvin can answer your question
when he comes online.
Jim.
