exact reason is unclear.</p>
<p style="margin: 0px;">I installed 'mate' - not realizing it was
another desktop, so I didn't log into it.</p>
<p style="margin: 0px;">At this point I still didn't have toolbars
in gnome 3.</p>
<p style="margin: 0px;">I installed KDE and logged in- toolbars
work.</p>
<p style="margin: 0px;">I logged into mate- realizing at this time
that it was a destop. It had a toolbar.</p>
<p style="margin: 0px;">I logged into gnome 3- now it has
toolbars. </p>

<p style="margin: 0px;">So maybe this isn't a driver issue but the
exact cause is murky.</p>

Weird, definitely. I wonder if something was not originally
installed correctly and when you installed KDE it was
updated/installed thus fixing the problem<br>
