I've done a couple experiments with headless VirtualBox and the PhpVirtualBox utility. It does the job.

--Cameron

I don't think either is OpenSource.
I would go with vmplayer. I use both. Virtualbox on my mac running a
Centos vm and vmplayer on windows with Fedora vm. The one failing I see
with Virtualbox is that you can't simply archive a virtual machine and
drop it on another Virtualbox machine. With vmware I can use my Centos
VM on any machine running vmware. I understand there is a way to do
this on virtualbox, but you have hoops to jump through.

One good example. I installed a new hard drive in my mac. Originally I
had two partitions on my mac, one for the Mac stuff, the other for my
vm. I had to name the partition the same name as was on the previous
drive otherwise, virtualbox would not run my archived vm.

Others might have more experience with this issue. As for me, I'm
likely to move my virtualbox VM to vmware in the future.
