That is good news! I bet a lot of people have sound cards that can be donated. That site probably uses Adobe Flash. I still have trouble with Flash on Linux. Isn't OpenSuse rpm-based, just like Redhat? It might be worth it to just install Ubuntu or Kubuntu on the boxes. Linux is way more hackable and flexible than Windows, perfect for education. I remember we had some Sun workstation boxes in my school. Someone had donated them. Those were wonderful machines.
I was at my son's school this morning and thrilled when I looked at the computers in his second grade classroom. One was running XP and the other two were running Open Suse. I really respect his teacher and asked if the kids have any trobules with the Linux boxes. She stated only that those machines "don't have sound cards" and that the kids cannot use a particular education site (encompasslearning).
Is anyone familiar with what the county is doing with Linux or technology in general? I would be glad to volunteer to either donate sound cards and configure them or (as I suspect) fix any driver issues plus install required software (e.g. Flash), but I'm afraid of what kind of red tape I may encounter. I also have no experience with OpenSuse (for better or worse I'm an old Mandrake turned Ubuntu user), but that shouldn't stop me.
Thanks,
