Well, if what you are saying is that they can blow away the old Droids, too it's really going to turn me off of not only V, but Motorolla for any future phone. What's the use of having an open OS on the phone when the service provider locks it down so you can't benefit from the openness?
I am considering going GSM, however, the big V has me by the short hairs, or at least the wallet on 2 of 5 phones on the family plan till June '11 and till Aug '10 for another, so I can't afford to leave now. Furthermore, ATT coverage isn't all that great and Tmobile is worse (I live ~ 30mi S. of Atl). Maybe LTE which V & ATT are going to will solve that by 2013? I am leery of Sprint's Wimax service so I don't think that is a viable option for the next year or two at least.

Well, if you switch to a GSM network (where you get more control and flexibility), you could get an HTC Dream or a Nexus One and run whatever you want on it. I am still running the Dream, but plan to buy a new phone in the next 1 to 3 years when one comes out that is (IMHO) worth upgrading to.

The latest CyanogenMod, which is built around Android 2.2 with the JIT compiler (disabled by default, but easy enough to enable) has put a breath of new life in my current phone, so I don't feel like I need to upgrade anymore for now.
