Sorry for the flurry of replies. I am wiped out and my thoughts are
not very cohenrent at the moment, but I seem to be focused on your
question.
I don't know if Fayetteville is closer, but

A quick google search dug this site out.
I didn't realize that dragoncon was a pay for membership site. you may
or may not like that.
But you might want to contact the guys at the above link and see if
they are closer and if they can help you find games and learn more
about being a regular player.

I personally would love to play, but I live in Dahlonega, and in case
you don't know that is about 60-80 miles NE of Atlanta, depending on
the destination.

There may be plenty of people on ALE that would love a game, I don't
know. Hopefully you find one. It really can be a fun game. It also
really starts to get interesting once you get some DM experience.

best of luck
I'm 31 years old and I finally played a game of D&D. I really like
it and I wanted to know if there's anyone else that plays? I'm apart of
a D&D group on Meetup.com, but going out to Marietta is a bit of a
stretch. So; I'm looking to find other players (south of Atlanta) that
would be interested in playing. I've written some blog posts about my
experience thus far (if you're interested):
