I too run Nvidia GeForce and have a signal loss issue when using the stock xorg.conf generated by the restricted driver. I've had to roll-my-own xorg file (which is okay with me) and am now reading with interest the tread regarding KMS.

I've had many *headaches* with 9.10 but none of them major and all of them nothing more than a challenge as I've made the switch for M$ to learn Ubuntu. (*Ubuntu? I'm going to learn Ubuntu?* -- see "Matrix Runs on XP" on Youtube...funny stuff).
Matrix Runs On XP

I've welcomed the tweaking and headaches as that's the best way to learn the system inside and out. I've been a Windows admin for 15-years now and intended to be a Linux admin for the past 10. Now that I've taken the *red pill* I'm doing the rabbit hole thing and have a long way to go.

I'm running 9.10 on my desktop and Fedora 12 on my laptop and am generally happy with both but both leave some to be desired. But that's why I've switched to Linux because I can change it to what I desire! So as much as I agree that Ubuntu has me sometimes thinking that I'm going to try something else...all I have to do is boot my old x64 box and I'm reminded of just how much I hate M$ and go back to learning to admin and tweak Linux. At least with a little tweaking I have 9.10 closer to where I want it as opposed to x64 where I can't get it where I want it...it doesn't do it.

My wife owns a Mac-mini (part of her recording studio) and it's okay for what it does -- runs Protools LE and that's it. She used to run it online in days of old but no longer. OS X is okay but man do I feel like my hands and feet are duct-taped together! (I'm with ya James!!!) Talk about an OS for the masses who just want to use the thing and never be able to do much with it (unless I'm missing something here...) As for M$ desktops...my favorite was NT. Back then there was a developer community that could do things...now with XP I guess it's not real bad from an admin standpoint but Vista and 7? Both are a Charlie-Foxtrot that I can see and I want no part of them...for better or worse I'm sticking with Ubuntu but will be migrating from a dedicated desktop installation to running virtual machines for a while on top of CentOS. We'll see how that goes but that's the direction that I wanted to try next.

Continuing on now to see about reading more on KMS and Nvidia.....cheers!!
Hear! Hear!
I mean seriously, Windows XP and 7 are NOT bad desktops. However they
are a pain to get to do anything outside of "normal" operations (as
defined by the design engineers). Mac just "works" unless you want to
do something Apple says you can't do
