Easy test: disable swap in /etc/fstab, reboot and see if things run OK. assuming to oom errors, if things run OK then the swap portion of the drive is crap.

If that's the case, don't save yourself any money by moving the data, reformatting, etc. Get a new drive.

If things DON'T work OK, it's either a bad sector crapping out a library function or a busted application. It was mentioned that the box mostly just runs Firefox. A secondary test is to remove adobe flash player (reboot) and see if it still locks or runs better. I have a few systems that various version of flash were just not happy with. Seems to crap out the video card which that backfeeds into hardlock state in a second or so.
Well if RAM and power are OK (likely are after 24hrs. and no errors w/ memtest) I suspect you may have issues with your hard drive. Does your hard drive light stay on when the system freezes? Have you scanned the disk for errors? Sleep mode/power settings on the hard drive?
Tim,

I sorry for the scan details.

First off, the problem is random and I have not checked to see if I can telnet into the box.
I have run memtest86 for 24 hours straight without any issues.

On time that does not seem to be random is when the system has had some amount of time with no activity.

The system is is a 4 year old desktop with 1 gb of memory and 160gb of disk space.
This is my test machine so, I have done fresh installs on this system with the same behavior.
When it locks up I am am forced to do a hard re-boot using the front panel buttons.

As for apps that I use, currently I am mostly using firefox. I have had it freeze when doing a system update, using the update manager tool.

Hope this helps because I am getting frustrated with this system.
Based on these scant details probably not. Can you be more specific? For
example:

* At what point does it freeze? during boot up? after you login?
after you start a particular app?
* Is the system running X?
* Is it a laptop? desktop? blade?
* Does it hum merrily along for a while then randomly freeze? or
does it consistently freeze at the same point?
* After it freezes can you access it by other means? ssh? ping?
* Are you forced to do a hard boot? or ctrl-alt-del?
