all,

I really want to get a droid but figuring out vz's plans is like negotiating a new car in the middle of a root canal... to be fair, I've been a vz cust for 5-6 yrs (forget exactly) and once you have a phone & are activated their network's great but the intentional (I believe) obfuscation is extremely annoying (to put it kindly) when you're shopping for new phone/plan.

anyway, I digress - I obviously need ssh from the phone & I've heard people throwing around $30 for data but when I try to order it describes that price point as "personal email & web" vs the $45 "unlimited data". does anyone know if the $30 data level is truly http/smtp/imap only? are there any alers who have successfully ssh'd from a droid on the $30 data plan?

I'm not sure what the confusion is. I signed up for the Nationwide Select 450 voice plan (equivalent plan to what I had prior to Droid) and added the $30 data plan (about $90 or so excluding fees and taxes), and I can ssh to boxes. More importantly is I have it set up on the various wireless networks (WPA2, WPA2 Enterprise) and when those networks are in range, it shifts data usage to that so I am not touching the expensive connectivity, though it is there if I need it.

And now, it looks like they've restructured the plans to make more sense, since I see a voice/email/web plan for $99 straight up.

Unlimited means unlimited time frames for data transfer of up to 5GB a month. VZW loves the 5GB limit.

Basically, if you're looking this way, you have to spend about $80 minimum to play. And if you wish to tether, when they offer it, it'll be a few bucks more. Reportedly supposed to be set up so that one way or another, for Droid data usage and tethering data to be $60 add on to voice.
