Well, the tech came and plugged a headset into the wall jack. He knew the sound he heard there contained unwanted noise. He went off and worked his magic and also replaced my modem. Everything is as solid as it used to be. I'm happy again.

I had a similar problem with my initial ATT dry line install. After a
couple calls to ATT support, they decided my modem was flaky and shipped
me a new one. I was very skeptical that that was actually the problem,
but it's been pretty reliable since then, and very solid for the
past couple of months.

I still have RoadRunner 3Mbit cable service, along with the ATT
3Mbit DSL. For the past week or so the RR connection has been
dropping for an hour or so every couple days, usually in the middle
of the day. The DSL has been much more reliable than RR recently.
On the other hand, my nearly ten years of experience with RR have
been mostly trouble-free. After three months or so of having cable
and DSL service side-by-side, I'm not sure which one I'd cancel if
I had to choose just one. It would probably come down to price,
in which case RR wins by a margin of $29 to $44.
