<br>A windows box isn't technically "required" to get the cable connection setup. However, that's all their techs know. I've found that most insist on playing with networking settings, if for no other reason than to look like they know what they're doing ... and most really don't. However, since the laptop will acquire it's networking info via DHCP, just preconfigure your laptop according, install IE6 (IE7 is buggy and in beta), and hope for the best. Yes a router is ideal, but it won't help with the setup process one bit. During a Comcast installation in April, the tech looked at me with blank eyes when I told him I'd be using my Ubuntu laptop for the setup. All he really needed was IE ... and ALOT hand holding and pats on the back and assurances that it would in fact work. And it did.<br>

</div>I had hoped this would be a simple installation. Guess I'd better see<br>
if I can get IE to run under wine for her. This old box can't run<br>
anything newer than Win98 and there's no way I'd open a Win98 system to<br>
the internet today.<br>

Another question. If I go buy a cable modem can I test to see if it<br>
will respond to firefox without being connected to the cable? Maybe<br>
that's a solution.<br>
