A workaround to the lower res laptop monitor is to change the monitor designation and use a "generic LCD" that supports up to the resolution of the external monitor. Now set up dual head using monitor 1 as a lower resolution, what the laptop can actually use, and monitor 2 is maxed out for the system. The graphics card may also be a limitation here as many are sized on laptop to genrate the output resolution for the LCD and no more.
I believe you're correct, Aaron. It looks like I'd need to get a docking
station to get better resolution on the external monitor (or somehow install
a 2nd video card in the laptop, which doesn't seem possible).
Thanks for the input folks.
