I second the thrift stores, since your needs sound pretty minimal. Lot of old towers end up there. I suggest you bring a live CD and floppy Linux distros. And a power cord. You could walk out of there with a perfectly usable system for $25.<br>

Sometimes pawn shops but they're usually overpriced. It doesn't sound like you really need any peripherals in them that you couldn't use from the other system, so I'd go the newegg route if you don't find anything at the local thrift store.<br>
