u r correct, Geoffrey. a disk is just a disk. The box booted up to Linux just fine, with the EIDE disk replaced in-place.<br><br>It was peculiar that the grub loading is rather slow. 15s before it says 'GRUB loading stage 1.5', then another 15s bfore it says 'loading GRUB'. Once I got to the GRUB boot menu, everything seems to normal speed.<br>

</div></div>I don't think gparted has anything to do with that. Once you put the<br>
drive in the computer, boot it with gparted and the partitions will no<br>
longer show up as scsi.<br>

I would expect that swaping eide for eide will permit you to simply boot<br>
afterwards, as long as you're correct in that mbr/grub is on a separate<br>
drive.<br>
