yum horked a file.

yum clean all

yum update

back to doing stuff. If you get unlucky and grab the updates metafile(s) during a server update, things can get scrambled. The above incantation resolved 99% of the problems,. The rest are resolved by waiting an hour ad rerunning the incantation (i.e. wait until the server finishes _it's_ upgrade)
Digging around I discovered that several xine files were available for
update, including xine-plugin.i386. I tried to install it, but kept
running into the same error: " Metadata file does not match checksum."
This occurred at fedora.omnispring.com, and at 12 other mirror
sites, including Gatech, Duke, usc, and iweb.ca, among others. I killed
the effort as pointless.

I remain clueless in Oak Grove.
