At my work, we use the Xircom 56K plus 10/100 ethernet and have never had a problem.  We have been phasing out the older dongle dell laptops by adding xircom nics.  However, this is not a linux shop (we only have a few test machines that are linux) and I can not offer an opinion using linux.
