I had a problem like this also.  I have a Diamond MX300 (Vortex2) sound

card and was experiencing a system hang in X with Gnome w/Sawfish or

Enlightenment.  I didn't dig too deeply since the problem went away when

I turned off Gnome and Sawfish's system sound effects.  I never did like

the sounds anyway.  The card is still functional and working great with

mp3's, CD's and Realplayer with no hangs.  Hope this sheds some light on

your issues.
