I'd see what the result of different cables would be, i.e., swap cables from

place to place.  My question would be:  my cable may test OK, but is it

testing OK in the right way??

Also, sometimes there are autonegotiation mismatches between some cards and

some switches.  Forcing the card's mode sometimes fixes this.  

I can definitely empathize, as I am in the middle of a home LAN setup

myself, involving 3 PCs of dramatically different vintages.  I haven't had

this much trouble since I put together a Banyan VINES LAN all by myself c.

1993.  It's a little embarassing.  Actually, what's giving me the most

difficulty are the little things - a disk drive with bad blocks, a Windows

machine whose networking doesn't, etc.
