Assuming the kernel's compiled correctly and you're not
running in framebuffer mode (I think), then you probably should be
able to do:
rdev -v /boot/vmlinuz -3
And get a list of all the different modes at boot time. Once
you find the one you like you can rerun rdev with that mode's number
from the list to set it as the default.
You can also do video=ask or video=# in your lilo.conf (and
possibly at the lilo prompt as well, but I'm not completly sure).
