Make sure that crontab is installed as root with the setuid bit set:
chown root.root /usr/bin/crontab
chmod 4755 /usr/bin/crontab

Subject:        [ale] crontab error
A friend just sent me a question regarding an error with crontab. I'm not
sure of the answer to his question and thought that I could post it here
for help. I will relay any responses received back to him.
Thanks in advance,
Michael Golden

Hey Michael,
Here is that crontab error I was telling you about on my friends
computer (mlqs.homeip.net). Let me know if you have any idea what would
cuase this and how to fix it. He's running "Linux 2.2.13-7mdksmp".
