If you are semi-brave you can run the latest 2.3.X kernels (now at
2.3.99-pre6) as they do have the multi-threaded improvements in the
networking stack. It has been my experience that going to a 2.3.X
kernel and the newest 2.0 version of VMware made a box that was not
usable for VMware (a P300 w/128Mb of memory), fast enough to use
VMware at a decent speed.
