You must be young. Before the Baby Bells, there was no way to actually buy a
phone - you could only rent
one from Ma Bell, and you had a choice of black or pinkish tan, and maybe 2
models. And long distance?
It cost much more than now - what can you get LD calls for now - $0.05/minute
from nearly everyone, and some
low-rent bulk services get half that.

Monopolies never lower prices - there is no incentive to.
