If you have PAM installed, then swat uses PAM to verify the
user/password pair. You might check that /etc/pam.d/samba
exists and makes sense. You might also check your logs for
authentication failures such as:
PAM_pwdb[12415]: 1 authentication failure; (uid=0) -> root for samba service
I doubt it makes any difference, but you could try giving the
user/pass with the URL:
http://root:>@localhost:901/
swat should accept any user/pass combo that is valid for logging
into linux (subject to whatever limits PAM imposes). Once validated,
the options available to the user depend on the user's read/write
access to the smb.conf file. Naturally, root is given full access.

Subject:        [ale] Samba and swat
I just installed the latest version of samba (2.0.7) and all is well with it.
My problem is the swat web interface. I made the changes to the services and
inetd.conf file and I do get a login prompt when I access http:/localhost:901,
but I can't login. Where is the user/passwd stuff stored for swat? How do I
find out what it is after?
