All good points. I run both IRIX and linux and each have their strong
points. SGI engineers have spent a lot of time squeezing every bit
of performance out of their graphics. If you do any OpenGL
programming, you can't do better for the most part. On the other
hand, for running the latest packages and for applications like
firewalling, ip masquerading, linux wins hands down.
As far as power failure goes, that is another strength of IRIX
(with XFS filesystem). When my power goes out, IRIX spends
less than a second checking all my filesystems on restart, while
the linux system sits for 15-20 minutes. If I had a UPS, I
would put it on the linux system and let the IRIX systems fend
for themselves - they can handle it. Linux will catch up in
this area soon.
