I must reply since I work with IRIX all day every day!
IRIX is SGI's Unix variant ( And a nice one at that!)
You can find alot of file system similarity with SuSE Linux. However,
RedHat has the chkconfig utility incorporated from IRIX into their
distribution.
SGI always has cutting edge stuff in hardware and software
concentrating on graphics, so you will find XFS type journaling file
systems exploding into Linux this year from their kindness to the Open
Source movement. Last year was introduction of the graphics on the
Pentium based SGI workstation line. I have SuSE Linux ReiserFS on my
laptop which helps on boot up time alot.
Your gonna love the graphics on your Indy if it is the XZ engine. The
Indy comes with 8bit, 24bit, and 24bit Zbuffered graphics. What you
want to have is the 24bit Z buffered engine known as XZ graphics.
The Indy's are known for input output options encompassing Sound,
Video and S-Video, Ethernet RJ45 and AUI, ISDN, SCSI, parallel, and
serial. If you have IRIX 6.2 on the system then you should check your
patches for known security holes as the current version of IRIX is
6.5.7. If you have connections thru the University System of GA or
some such educational institution you may be able to get hardware and
software contracts for a reduced rate. A software contract is more
important at this point since you may want some of SGIs nice
software. The compilers, printing software, logical volume plexing,
software development environment, and software packaging environment
to name a few, require licenses to function. You can try out the free
SGI software page at www.sgi.com for lots of free stuff.
Don't leave this list, just add the SGI lists on USENET. The software
and admin lists are helpful.
You probably should look into APC's Powerchute plus for IRIX for safe
shutdown on power failure.
Also, Linux on MIPs is there but that's about it. What I've heard is
that most packages either are broken or not ported. I haven't tried
it myself. I hope you enjoy your machine!
