Just minor! 8-;
Swat is terrible compared to webmin. Command line is your savior when you
have
problems with Samba.
I have had tons of problems with 2.0.6 on a Solaris box in a Win2k corporate
domain. 2.0.5 just runs great!
Samba can be very weird, since Microsoft can change things with just a whim
without telling anybody.

If the client software controls changes to the database file and just needs
access to the file over a peer to peer network, you are in luck. If you need
some Microsoft software (like their sql server) running on the cyrix machine
to serve out data from the database you are out of luck.
Linux runs just fine on Cyrix boxes (even though they are crappy little
processors.) My work pc, from which I write this, is an old cyrix box with a
10 GB hard drive. I have this little box acting as a samba file server,
occasionally run NT in VMware on it, and it's my workstation. What can I
say? we're not a rich company.
I have a dedicated linux file server here running samba; on this box is a
Goldmine database for my sales weasels and a peachtree accounting database
for the accountant types. So, depending on what type of database you have,
it can be done.
When setting up Samba, use the newest version (released yesterday) 2.0.7.
Use SWAT to configure it. I'm a big proponent of learning to admin from the
command line but SWAT simply rocks. To access SWAT, make sure it is enabled.
Its line in /etc/inetd.conf should be uncommented and inetd restarted if
necessary. Make sure samba is running /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start. Then use a
web browser to go to http:// address of machine>:901. Log in with the
root password and configure the machine to be part of your windows network
(this requires some understanding of netbios.) Restart samba for the changes
to take effect: /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb restart.
Depending on how you set up your shares, you may need to add local accounts
for your users, even if they will never log in locally.
Make sure you have a backup solution working. I back up files using samba to
another linux box running samba and BRU. If you want to use a local backup,
you may want to set up cron to stop samba before the backup runs and restart
it afterwards. If you use NFS to back up files, I would still shut down
samba. I get worried about different programs not recognizing each others
file locks.
With large disk drives, I run into fewer boot problems if I make a separate
boot partition of about 15 MB. I also recommend you use the latest
distribution of your choice (although I hear some nasty stories about
Mandrake.) I personally am a RedHat fan. RedHat 6.2 has been impressing the
hell out of me with its plug and play support. This is the first
distribution that autodetected my sound blaster live card (on my home
machine) and set it up for me, a job that used to require me to jump through
hoops. It also autodetected my Quantum 4000 tape drive. Very nice.
If you need any help with samba, shoot me an email. I'm no expert but I've
picked up a few things here and there over the last couple of months and am
willing to help.

Afriend of mine says he has had constant problem with 98 on a cyrix. I think
it is because can't format the 13 gig hd to full capacity. It's formatted at
8gigs now. But the system was glitzzy b4. though. We have P2 availible in
another office. I might move the DB the P2 but I would like to use the cyrix
with linux to word process. I would like tie into our peer to peer network.
