I personally use poprelayd .. It basically stores the IP Address of my
users for about 15 minutes, and then allows them to use my SMTP... After
the 15 mins expires w/o them re-checking their mail, it deletes it from the
database.
If you're interested, I can send you the poprelayd Perl Script as well as
the necessary changes you need to make to your Sendmail.cf
