Over the weekend, I was able to successfully install and boot RH 6.2 on a
new Athlon system (ASUS K7V mobo). It has two 20GB ATA66 drives, one per
controller, and an SIIG AP-10 Fast SCSI-2 card on which there is a Ricoh
CD-RW drive with 24X read.
When copying files from data CDs to disk, there will initially be a burst of
files as one would expect. Then, files will "dribble" from the CD-RW at a
low rate, say, ~20-50KB files at one every 1-2 sec. While this is
happening, the CD-RW drive's activity light will indicate "idle." Every so
often, there will be another burst at expectable speeds, followed by more
slow motion. This continues until the copy finishes.
FWIW, blasting hundreds of meg from drive to drive is no problem and, when
32-bit mode and DMA access are enabled, hdparm -t reports ~24MB/s on both
drives (without 32-bit mode and DMA access enabled, it's only about
3.5MB/s!!). Installing RH6.2 from the CD-ROM did not seem to go unusually
slowly at all and seemed consistent with doing an install from a 24X CD-ROM
drive.
What could be the matter? Or, what can I do to better narrow down the
cause?
