If the hard drive just had the info trashed, or got a bad spot or two,

you can probably still load Linux.  Linux will format and check the

drive for errors.  If the hard drive is physically bad, gonna be cheaper

just to purchase a new hard drive.  Instructions with hard drives make

it easy enough to replace your old one.
