Full disclosure, I work for AT&T....
I originally had 3 analog cell phones through Bellsouth. I converted
them to digital. Didn't get reasonable service and felt I'd been lied
to. I attempted to use the phones well inside BellSouth's designated
service area (I575 and Bells Ferry, for example) and I couldn't even
dial out.
I changed to AT&T. Here's the part most of them won't tell you. If
you're used to an analog phone, chances are it had more wattage
(possibly a LOT more) then your PCS (choose your favorite digital
technology). This being the case, the signal won't be near as strong as
your previous analog phone. I can drive down the road and watch my
signal go from max to min and back to max in a few miles. This never
happened with my analog phones.
Also, digital has real problems with hills, valleys, inside buildings
and such. If you live much north of Atlanta, you can expect any service
to be sporadic it sucks.
I get a little better coverage with my AT&T phones vs. BellSouth. The
main difference is that the AT&T guy at least let me know the issues
regarding the lower wattage and geography. The salesperson knew I was an
AT&T employee in advance of our discussion.
I will say this. Look at the coverage area maps each provider has
available. If you're on the fringe, I'll be willing to bet you will not
be able to use your phone in that area.

I'm afraid there will be more problems with W2K than there were with
Y2K...
