He is right about one thing, its not a great opportunity for them. If they
release Office for windows they will be giving up a huge portion of their
controlling grasp on the desktop market. If not for games and application
support we would be seeing Linux on far more desktops, of coarse all these at the
expense of windows.
As bad as I want to see more apps on Linux I don't feel that the DOJ should
single out Linux as a competitor OS. Why not include BSD, B, Solaris, OS/2, and
all others? Besides what quality could you expect from a company forced to
create software they don't want too. The compatibility issues between MAC and
Windows Office Versions should be some indicator of what you could look forward
too.
The proper solution is to develop a open standard for sharing documents,
spread sheets, projects and the like. Then convince businesses to use it. I
thought that's what the Rich Text Format, XML, SGML, etc. were all about.
Simply say NO to .doc and .xl and life gets a whole lot simpler.
Personaly I think Microsoft Office is soon going to be a non issue anyway. I
see less and less people requiring documents in .doc these days. Most are happy
with .rtf, .txt or even .html now if a suitable replacement for .xl files could
be found. :-)
