BZZZT - I had earlier run 'ps -aux' and found a Netscape task listed for
which I saw no window in the Gnome pager - maybe it was minimized, or
maybe its parent process had been terminated. I then killed that Netscape
process: "$ kill ". Could the ports be hung that way, by my killing
their using processes?
