I'm not quite sure I phrased that correctly either? I'm shifting my
connection to Telocity ADSL servicefrom my Charlotte based
ISP. Unfortunately, Telocity and the Bell South infrastructure seem to be
having "issues". Rather than sit and wonder how good/bad the service
is/appears, I would like to actively monitor it, and record the service
levels. Of course, I _don't_ want to flood the net with random packets,
and I don't want to be an irritation to someone. My guess is that a single
ping packet to one or two known hosts every five, ten, or fifteen minutes
would be sufficient. Wrap it all up in a script, hand it to cron, and
digest the log file later.
Am I on the right track, or is there a better, more efficient, less
invasive approach I should consider? With more and more homes getting
cable and xDSL service, this might be something worth doing for more
people.
