Hello -
Thanks to the advice on openssl and openssh, I am pretty close to working,
I think. My installations are 2.2.* kernels in one RH4.2-derived and one
RH6.1 system.
With regard to installation:
1) I removed my 'rpm' editions, and built openssl-0.9.5a and openssh-1.2.3
from their 'generic' sources with only the surprize that both seem to
configure and build most happily in their own source directories - not as
GNUish as I have come to like.
2) Dow Hurst also provided clues with his start/stop script, but I had
better luck with the examples in openssh-1.2.3/contrib/redhat for both
PAM and init.d. I put the startup in rc.local, which isn't very elegant,
nor does it get stopped in an orderly way at shutdown.
With regard to use:
1) I am having no problem 'ssh'-ing between boxen, though I have one
question: if I _go_to_ a dynamically-assigned IP address, 'ssh' wants to
set a permanent "accept" next to the key from whichever IP address was
used. Can I force the acceptance to be "one session only" so I don't
leave a hanging login-permission against that dynamic IP address?
2) I am not successful with 'scp' to copy files and I thing I may be
missing some configuration or step with this. The effect is an error
message 'scp not found' or something to that effect, even though I have
put '/usr/local/bin' in my PATH and 'which scp' returns the correct
executable. Any suggestions on debugging this?
Regards and Thanks-
John Mills
