If I understand you, this happened to me this weekend. After checking
that my volume settings were rational (make certain that the CD input
is not all the way down and volume it at a resonable level), I opened
the box. It turned out that the cable between the CDROM and the sound
card was disconnected. I have a SCSI cable that would pull the cd
cable loose when I turned the machine up into tower position. I would
fix the problem, then put the machine back together, and the next
thing I knew it was broken again.
