When I cat the file to /dev/audio I get the appropriate sound from the
speakers. I know the cdrom works with the speakers because I have a dual
boot system which works fine. Running RED HAT 5.1 with the OSS driver(s)
works fine. There is now a disconnect between the fully functional speakers
and the fully functional CDROM.
I assumed that 6.1 supports my PCI128 ensonics soundblaster card out of the
box.

By "successfully" do you mean that you hear the output?

"Start" means that is spins the disk, and earphones work, but not the
speakers?

If I understand you, this happened to me this weekend. After checking
that my volume settings were rational (make certain that the CD input
is not all the way down and volume it at a resonable level), I opened
the box. It turned out that the cable between the CDROM and the sound
card was disconnected. I have a SCSI cable that would pull the cd
cable loose when I turned the machine up into tower position. I would
fix the problem, then put the machine back together, and the next
thing I knew it was broken again.
